Abstract

The term Digital Twin, which has been in use for several years, still contains visionary aspects. Taking these into account will lead to the development of next generation digital twins. The prospects for this are presented and discussed on the basis of two examples. In addition to its use in development, the digital twin as a copy of the real system will increasingly enable new simulation-based solutions. The cross-lifecycle perspective paired with value chain aspects will extend this general idea and lead to a digital-twin ecosystem.
