A goal of Industry 4.0 is to increase the flexibility of industrial production. At the same time, a number of heterogeneous engineering and runtime systems that form the backbone of today‘s automation systems are not interchangeable. If engineering systems are to interact with different runtime environments, both the communication between engineering systems and runtime systems must be standardized, with a harmonized presentation of the system to be processed. We present a meta-model for the description of software applications that is abstracted from domain-specific implementations. The uniform interface for engineering means that in distributed systems with a heterogeneous system structure, engineering systems with different runtime environments can interact. The article concludes with a mapping of the meta-model to the models of the two systems Eclipse 4diac and ACPLT / RTE used in the research project BaSys 4.0 (Basic System Industry 4.0).
