Abstract

With increasing electricity generation from renewable energies, storage systems are becoming increasingly important. The necessary planning and analysis functions for the economic and ecological operation of storage systems are the focus of this paper. First, these functions are described, and requirements for them are derived. In a numerical case study, a simple example of a planning function in the form of a mathematical optimization model is used to purchase electricity as cheaply and with as few emissions as possible on the intraday power exchange. The case-study shows that the costs and emissions of  purchasing electricity can be reduced significantly by using  storage facilities. However, it is also shown that the savings potential for storage increasingly flattens out with storage sizes greater than four hours of operation.
