From the perspective of the process industry, integrating machine safety functions into process safety functions has always been a challenge. In general, the concepts of IEC
61511 “Functional Safety – Safety-related Systems for the Process Industry” form the basis for safety functions in the process industry – however, these concepts are not fully compatible with the functional safety of machines according to IEC 62061 or ISO 13849. The situation is not new, and the
solutions presented here are already being implemented in some companies. This article describes some practical approaches.
