Fine fractions of suspended solids (SS63) are a new decisive parameter for the qualitative assessment of stormwater pollution runoff in Germany. While total suspended solids (TSS) can be measured according to DIN 38409-2 or DIN EN 872, a standardized determination method for SS63 is still missing. Therefore, the methodology-dependent factors must be identified that influence the analytical recovery rate of SS63 in road runoff. In a multi-stage process, standard materials of known particle size distribution (PSD) and organic content are composed of collected street dusts. By using the standard materials, the influences of different filter materials, sieving methods, and dispersion methods on the measured
SS63-concentrations were determined. The result of the lab experiments was that both glass microfiber filters and membrane filters are suitable.
Three sieving methods were tested for separating the coarse solid fractions (SScoarse) and recommendations were formulated for their application. The dispersion method influences the recovery rate with some materials and the manual method “vigorous shaking” fitted best.
