Potentials for substituting drinking water with other sources of water were estimated for Frankfurt am Main in a transdisciplinary study with the help of secondary data and scenario considerations. For the urban area, the potentials can only be comprehensively realised in the long term and with political effort. From 2050 onwards, the use of service water could make a significant contribution to reducing the effort required to produce drinking water. Cost and CO2 balances show that the higher resource and energy input for construction and operation strongly depends on local conditions.
